Prebiotics – what are they and why are they important?

So most of us have heard about Probiotics – they are the “good bacteria” that is necessity to maintain a healthy environment within our gut. But anyone heard of Prebiotics? What are they – is this yet another thing that we need to add to our list of supplements?

Well, most of us eat these foods fairly often without even knowing it. Prebiotics are called this because when it is first consumed it is NOT a probiotic, it only becomes a probiotic once it has hit our intestines and the intestinal microflora then helps to ferment it and turn it into a probiotic! At this stage, it stimulates growth and activity of healthy intestinal bacteria. Pretty cool huh?

Some of the foods rich in Pre-biotics include:

  • Jerusalem artichokes
  • Onions
  • Chickory
  • Garlic
  • Leeks
  • Bananas
  • Fruit
  • Soybeans
  • Asparagus
  • Chives
  • Peas
  • Eggplant,
  • Honey
  • Maple
  • Green tea
  • Peas
  • Legumes
  • Kefir
  • Cottage Cheese
  • Burdock Root
  • Yogurt
